You Put What Where?

Julie is heading out of town tomorrow for a business trip and it seems that the kids are bound and determined to make her glad she's gone :)

Just before supper tonight, Kara turned to us and said, "I've got a shoe up my nose."

It turns out she had shoved a tiny little shoe from her Cinderella doll right up her nostril. I tried to get it out by massaging the nasal passage and shining a flashlight up there, but to no avail.

So off to the hospital we went. Amazingly, there were no patients in the waiting room in Georgetown tonight and we were whisked right in. The doctor had a look inside and then had me perform the procedure to help extricate the nasal footwear.

For those at home who want to know what to do if your kid shoves something up their nose, it's quite easy to fix (most of the time).

Step 1: Plug the other nostril.
Step 2: Put your mouth over their mouth a la performing mouth-to-mouth respiration.
Step 3: Blow into your beloved child's mouth in short, strong breaths to force the offending blockage out.
Step 4: Stand back or you will have the side of your face coated in mucus.

While we didn't actually get the shoe out by doing this, we did get it close enough to the edge of her nostril that we could see it and pull it out with tweezers. We were in and out of the hospital in about 15 minutes, which was awesome.

So now Julie has a fun little story to tell over dinner tomorrow or Wednesday while she is in sunny Calgary :)
